Dr. Lynn is Managing Director, Head of Investment Strategy and Research at ING Clarion. His 7-member team is responsible for providing the firm’s strategic and tactical recommendations affecting its investment portfolios. Through his team’s proprietary, numbers-driven approach, he directs asset selection, portfolio analytics, market targeting, econometric forecasting and investment theme formulation. He assists the firm’s fund and product development initiatives. His group provides real-time market intelligence for the US and global markets.
Dr. Lynn has extensive experience in portfolio management, investment strategy, research, property development (sourcing, structuring, entitling, and construction), equity investment (acquisitions, underwriting, and disposition), and product design in all real estate sectors in the United States and major international markets in Asia, Europe and Latin America.
His theoretical work has yielded new approaches and analytical techniques in the areas of active portfolio management, market forecasting, financial distress, supply constrained markets, high beta sectors, and global industrial markets. He has published widely on the subjects of real estate investment, development, economics, and land use. He has translated his research and management expertise into a wide array of style-based investment strategies. Dr. Lynn has written or co-authored over 70 articles, internal investment and strategy papers, three major books (including Active Private Equity Real Estate Strategy, and Emerging Market Real Estate Investment), book chapters, and founded an academic journal called Colloqui. He writes a highly-regarded column, called "Capital Trends" in the National Real Estate Investor. He is widely quoted in major real estate periodicals and is a regular speaker and presenter at industry conferences and meetings.
Dr. Lynn is a member of the ING Clarion Investment and Operating Committees. In addition, he is a member of the Investment Policy Committee for the ING Clarion Diversified Fund (a target date fund). He is also an advisor to the ING Clarion Mexico Fund, Clarion REIT Trust (CRT--a private REIT),and the Brazil and ING Global Select Funds. He joined ING Clarion in 2007.
Education
Dr. Lynn earned his Ph.D. in Financial Economics at the London School of Economics, where he also earned a Master of Science specializing in Finance. His doctoral research focused on financial distress in emerging market countries. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Sloan School of Management, MIT, where he specialized in Finance and Real Estate. He earned a Masters in City and Regional Planning with an emphasis in Real Estate from Cornell University. His thesis research explored the application of strategic planning to the real estate industry. He earned a B.A. in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley.
He is a Counselor of Real Estate (CRE), a Certified Portfolio and Investment Manager (CPIM), a Chartered Management Analyst (CMA), a Homer Hoyt Fellow, an ISO 9000 Certified Auditor and a Certified Planner (AICP). He is a member of the American Real Estate Society (ARES), National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF), National Association for Business Economics (NABE), International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) (full member). He serves on the Editorial Board of the Counselors of Real Estate and the Advisory Board of PREA.
